Chromatic Shadow is a solo exhibition exploring the transformative power of shadow — its chromatic nature, layered complexity, and potential to heal society.
In this exhibition, shadow is explored not as absence but as presence. In Zu’s philosophy, shadow is yin: the feminine, intuitive, and receptive force symbolised by the moon. It is a metaphor for the unconscious, holding what society often refuses to see – unwanted thoughts, taboos, and hidden truths. Moving fluidly between darkness and light, shadow provokes chance, nurtures renewal, and offers the possibility of healing.
Zu draws on decades of research and experimentation, weaving together traditional Chinese papercutting, contemporary art, and multimedia forms. Her signature hand-cut installations manifest a yin-yang dynamic, inviting viewers into immersive environments that reveal the interplay of polarities. Through poetic visual storytelling, she explores the inseparable relationships between nature and humanity, heaven and earth, sun and moon, man and woman, hardness and softness – showing that dualities do not divide but coexist, shift, and transform.
In Chromatic Shadow, each cut is both precise and spontaneous, balancing tension with release. Light and shadow meet, colour emerges – shadow becomes chromatic. The exhibition invites viewers to contemplate the fundamental forces shaping our world and to reflect on the deep interconnectedness that underpins it.
