Nelly, magpie and possum
2021

When Nelly was 6-year-old, she cared for a chook that her grandma rescued. Since then, she has developed a great empathy towards animals. At present, Nelly is a wildlife carer while studying to be a vet.

Nelly has turned her house into a rehab home for native wildlife, such as possums and magpies. She knitted nests for them. ’The urban wildlife connect us with nature. It always brings me joy to heal them and release them to nature.’ Today is Nelly’s birthday. She successfully released the currawongs that were in her care. ‘Happy birdday to me!!!’ She says.

The work is a call for action. As Nelly expressed: ‘I’d like to urge people to call Sydney wildlife rescue when sighting any sick or orphaned animals so we can help them!’

I knew Nelly since she was born. I was inspired by Nelly’s connection with nature. This papercut explores a recurring theme of my work – a harmonious coexistence of humans and nature.
