Architectural Projection – NLA

Chinese-Australian multi-media artist Tianli Zu creates a three-part projection by manipulating Qing Dynasty imagery with her signature cut-outs. The work allows viewers to weave through and experience traditional and contemporary Chinese culture.

In ‘Monkey’, Zu depicts a legendary Chinese Monkey King, who rises above the golden sea and rides on clouds, observing changes to the world.

‘Lifestyle’ reflects the coexistence of war and a mundane lifestyle during the Qing Dynasty, revealing the perseverance of people in achieving harmony.

‘Chasing the Phantom’ takes its title from the classic Chinese text, Book of Songs, and extends traditional perceptions into a contemporary formation.
